it's basically a sophisticated variation on the technique I documented here:

The difficulty in solving the problem purely through curves is that you don't want to apply the curves change everywhere in the image. The noise is primarily in the shadows, so you need a luminosity-dependent fix. You also need to be careful that the luminosity cutoff is not too sharp or you'll induce worse bands.

There are a few other techniques in the prototype, including one that eliminates luminance bands in a manner that would be difficult to replicate in photoshop.

So far, the software definitely helps cure the problem, but it's not a complete solution. There's often a color shift in at least part of the image. My goal is just to get the banding down to the point that smart blurring and noise reduction software can almost totally eliminate the bands.
