Best method for macro photography for...

I am photographing guns with a 40D and a 17-85mm USM IS canon lens. Right now, all I have for a flash is the Sigma EF-500 DG with a Stofen diffuser. I have been thinking of some budget types of macro ring flashes, but I'm just not sure. Can someone recommend a method for photographing firearms from A-Z with what I have. What distance from the firearm should the camera be, IS on or off, etc...? Thank you in advance for your suggestions.
