OK- I'll admit to needing focus help D300

I've always been able to take a decent pic & have really been enjoying my D300 but.... I am really having a problem with auto-focus on the D300. Could someone walk me me through the correct steps? Just this morning I took shots of my dog running toward me- they start out OK but then as she gets nearer very out-of focus.
