70-200 2.8 vr or 300 f4

I was curious if anyone has run into a similar dilemma and what their solution is/was. I am slowly building my digital capacity with 18-200 vr (great all around lens), 12-24 nikkor (great wide angle), 80-400 vr (good handheld tele), on a D200. Ready to expand as budget alows and trying to decide what my 2008 purchase will be. I'm down to two option; 70-200 2.8 vr or 300 f4 with TC. I'm trying to have my cake and eat it too since my budget can only permit one of these options. The purpose: I shoot, for my personal pleasure only, landscapes, wildlife, and my twins soccer games, and street scenes.
If $$$$$ was NOT an issue I would buy the 200-400 vr but $5K is out of my reach.
I see the 300 f4 with 1.4 and 1.7 TC as really good options for wildlife and limited somewhat for kids activities.
I see the 70-200 f 2.8 vr as really good for kids activities and limited for wildlife.
My open question is: What can I expect from IQ and overall quality of the two lens as described above? I can only afford one in 2008 and trying to look at the pros and cons early. Thanks and happy holidays!
