Anyone see the D3 insert in American Photo?

It's a standalone, poster-size print that comes inserted in the latest issue of the magazine. Shows a stop-action, close-up shot of a motorcyclist (in a race) at ISO 6400. Dramatic shot with a dramatic perspective, and at first glance it's somewhat impressive.

However, a closer look shows it ain't sharp and it's very, very noisy ... particularly if you look at the cyclist's face peering out from behind his helmet. It looks like somebody lightened up that area then applied some USM (just guessing). Very broken up and blotchy overall.

Makes me wonder what Nikon had hoped to accomplish with this. I guess for ISO 6400 (shutter speed is noted as 1/5000), it looks good enough. But as an old adman friend of mine used to say, "Good enough isn't good enough."
