the lens is great for casual indoor shooting - you don't have to use it at 1.4 f2 is pretty good and will get you 2 stops better than a 18-135mm lens

i agree the first thing to get is a flash you can bounce

but with the bigger aperture you can use less of the flash and more of the ambient lighting shows up which is a good thing

as for zooming - 30mm is a great focal length for walking around to small groups of people and say - hey strike a pose
