D3 slow focusing Tamon 28-75
Dec 6, 2007

I got a D3, Tamon 28-75, Nikon 50 1.4 and a 105 VR Macro. In dim light like a restaurant or dance floor the D3 is very slow, sometimes it takes up to a second to lock focus. The 50 1.4 seems worse. I end up just using the center focus point then recomposing when I have to.

Anyway, my Canon 20D with a 28 2.8 is much fast focusing in dim light.

I'm a bit worried that at a wedding I'd miss a lot of moments. Using a 20D and 24-70 and a 5D 24-70 at weddings didn't feel this sluggish. With the D3 I have to take more time to try to focus on an area of contrast to lock focus.

Would the Nikon 24-70 be a lot better?

The D3 and 105 VR Micro in daylight was rather slow in focusing compared to my Canon 135 but I would not expect a micro to be fast. I had the 105 in the focus range limiting position.
