Is it really necessary to have a uv protector on your lens

Hello,

I tried running a search but it was not working. I'm ordering the 70-200 2.8 IS tonight and was having a hard time paying the 86 dollars for the uv protector. I have them on my other lens.are they really worth it? thanks for the thoughts.
