help with printing please

Hey all, quick question. I made a couple of large prints recently taken with my 10mp Canon. I almost never print, and don't know much about it. The photos were full size and I sent them via email to be printed. When I picked up my prints they all had a kind of light vertical banding in them. You have to look kind of close, but its DEFINATELY there. Did I do something wrong with my shots, or could this just be bad printing. The one thing I was wondering about was dpi. I don't really understand this and how it relates to the resolution and printing. I did light pp to all the shots in photoshop CS, and I think the dpi was set to 72. I think this is the default setting, but you need more than that for prints right? How do you change this, what does it mean, can you set up the G9 to output pics with a higher dpi?? Sorry for my ignorance on this, any help appreciated.

thanks,

Lance
