Prime for Indoor Low Light with D40
Nov 2, 2007

I'm looking for a prime for use indoors in low light situations (parties) that'll both 1) enable me to take photos without relying on the flash and 2) provide nice bokeh. My options as I understand it are basically the Sigma 30mm 1.4 and the Nikon 50mm 1.8. My question is:

After getting used to MF with the 50mm 1.8 is it possible to take photos as quickly as you'd be able to with AF? Can you reliably MF in low light? What's your percentage of OOF photos?

I'd rather get the Nikon 1.8 because it's said to be sharper and is much cheaper (cost is huge to me). But if it's going to take me longer than like 10 seconds to compose a photo at a party, it'll be worthless, I'll probably only end up using the lens when out on my own and have time to compose.

Or is 50mm too long for indoor shots at a party?

Choices choices....
