Update:

Got my lens back from Nikon. Another replacement with another new serial number, packaged up as new (I now have 3 bags, and 3 lens hoods!

New lens: Focus seems excellent. Somehow better than I remember. Slight delay after half shutter press, but really tight, accurate focus. Is this a result of the new firmware? (I upgraded to 2.0 last week.)

Now onto the VR: It appears to function correctly (through the viewfinder) just like my first and second units appeared to function (until the latter failed). HOWEVER: it only takes a quick look at the magnified image on the D70 screen to see that the VR shots are softer than the no VR shots in the 1/200th second range at 300mm.

Not good.

I think there really must be a problem between my D70 camera (perhaps ALL D70?)and the 70-300VR.

Matt
