Any suggestion on the best way to learn your camera and glass??

I have a 30D with 3 different lenses (17-55 f/2.8 IS, 24-70 f/2.8L and 70-200 f/2.8 - Sigma Macro) with 580EX flash. Which I now think is too much to fast (I have had my camera for about 1yr).
So, what I am attempting to do is slooow things down a bit. For the last couple of months I have only used just one lens (17-55 f/2.8). I am thinking I would do better if I become more/very familar with "strengths and weakness" of particular combination before moving one to another combination. Thinking that this would help give me the experience to more easily learn to use additional combination.
Hopefully this will also help me with my compositions my hope is to eventually do less "cropping".
I try to take photos whenever I can (which I feel is never often enough). I know there is no "magic bullet" for real world practice and for those who simply have the "gift of sight" but any suggestions, comments would be truly appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your time and consideration.

Yes, it is hot but it's a dry heat. We don't sweat we swelter.
