EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS USM

I am new to photography and I mainly shoot my kids in sports. Primairly hockey and baseball. The camera I have is the 40D. I am considering the EF 70-200 f/2.8 is usm. Does any one have any suggestions for a different lens or is this the one I should own.
