40d & Canon 70-300 IS & kenko 1.4x teleconverter

I have encountered tha same problem with 400 5.6 + Kenko 1.4 tc 300 pro. While it works perfectly with my 30D and so did with 20D, with 40D this combo hunts very much before focusing; I use this combo in 100% of my bird shots.. so I'm also disappointed.. the only good think is that I didn't give back the 30D, so I'm considering wether keep 40D (for landscape and portrait I use the 5D) or give it back... The only hope is that maybe with Canon 1,4x and tc (always with taped pints, of course) the 40D works good, but I wold like more confirmation about that... because I don't believe it is a matter of brand and also the Canon tc 1,4x added to the 5.6 400 lens givesa a total aperture of 6.3 ...
