dSLR's can't compete with the newer bridge cameras (food for thought)
Aug 27, 2007

I have heard and read all the agruments about the new low prices on dSLRs and that this will put bridge cameras out of business.

But let me argue in the other direction. It seems to me that the newest bridge cameras with their Ultra Zoom lenses are "uping the ante" by making it harder for the dSLR to compete. So, lets say you buy a D40 with the 18-55 kit lens and add the 55-200 (now you have the 35mm equvalent of 28-300) for $800 US (that is nearly 2x the price of the latest crop of bridge cameras!)

But the latest bridge cameras with the 18x zoom goes out to 500mm!! That means you've got to add another lens or two to the D40 to get the same coverage.

So, I am proposing that the new 18x zooms are going to make it harder for the dSLRs to compete.

Just my 2 cents worth.
