Tamron 90mm Macro VS Sigma 150mm Macro (sample)
Aug 18, 2007

I've been using the Tamron 90mm F/2.8 Macro for a number of months. My father really liked the quality of the shots I was getting with my D80 and was thinking about getting one for himself. As I wanted a bit more working distance as well as a bit longer prime macro, I sold the Tamron to him to use with his Fuji S1 Pro and purchased a Sigma 150mm F/2.8 Macro to replace it.

One of the best shots I'd gotten with the Tamron was of this Dragonfly. Today, it was like he or his twin brother returned to the same spot, so I shot a few with the Sigma to compare.

It feels like the Sigma focuses faster, but has more trouble locking on in AF-S when approaching Macro distances. It's about the same or better beyond close up shots. The Sigma doesn't lock in on objects as well as the 70-300mm VR (with good light) but these are early days with the lens and practice makes, ah, in my case it makes more files (grins).

I think they're pretty much equal in all other respects (sharpness, color, etc). I'm ... what's the politically correct term .. caloric-ly enhanced? .. big-boned? .. too short for my weight? .. well, you get the idea, so the extra weight of the Sigma doesn't bother me and I really like the extra working distance.

Maybe with more time with the Sigma I'll become more proficient. Hope you enjoy the shots.
