Flash 580 EX II and autofocus help

There's a function with the flash that under certain conditions, low light or low contrast a red light appear to help the autofocus. This lignt don't work in P, Av, Tv, just in auto mode and portrait, landscape etc... not in expert mode. Is it normal, or is there something i have missed.
