Thinking of switching from PC to Mac
Aug 11, 2007

My PC is getting long in the tooth and I'm thinking of switching to a Mac. I have a 3-1/2 year old Windows XP model with 2 gig of RAM. I run NC 4.2 and Capture NX (plus Elements 3.0) when editing D200 nefs. My computer works OK but it is slow at processing NEFs and videos. I could live with that (I tried setting up a swap disk, etc. but did not see a significant improvement) but my PC is crashing more and more often. It makes me nervous.

I'm kind of turned off by the cult of Apple, but I like its reputation for reliability and freedom from crashes.

If anyone has made such a switch (no need to respond if you're just thinking of it), a few questions:

1. Will Nikon make me buy new software for the Mac?
2. Are their machines any faster than comparable PCs?

3. Recognizing that graphics people like Macs, is there any advantage for a user of Nikon (i.e., 3rd party) software?
4. Is Mac's reputation for reliability and freedom from crashes justified?

I'll post this in the retouching forum if I don't get much of a response here, but I thought I'd target Nikon users first.
