10D and "auto power off" / battery life

My old 10D has always been set to power off at 2 minutes. It drove me crazy the last time I used it in S. Africa waiting for it to power up after going to sleep . I'm taking it to Kenya next week as a backup camera, and wonder about experience with setting the power-off to a much longer setting.

Does anyone have any experience with setting auto power off at maybe 15 or 30 minutes and how much more this drains battery, which CAN be a concern on a safari, as charging batteries isn't always as convenient as we would like since electricity is not always on 24/7 in the lodges / camps.

I take 3 backup batteries for EACH camera (10D, 20D and Pro 1) on these trips and try to keep them in rotation and constantly charged, but you can't always count on that.

Thanks guys

carolyn
