G7 Wide and Tele Adaptors

Im confused, do these stay on permanently or are they only attached when required? I take it the tele lens protrudes from the camera even when turned off? How abouyt the wide, just that also protrude?
Has anyone got any photos of the G7 with these attached?
Finally, does IQ suffer much with pin cushioning and distortion? How about IQ in general? (sharpness/contrast)
