Bird Photography - Top Tips?

Hey Folks,

I am going to Skomer island off the south west coast of Wales in a couple of week and it provides a great opportunity to try some bird photography, something I haven't really tried much before. Hopefully I will be seeing Puffins, Gulls and the like and could use some tips as to the best approach to take.

I also want to start taking more bird shots around my local patch, what's the best approach to take to get into this genre? Start with the garden birds first?

Kit = D200, Sigma 70-200 2.8, Nikkor 300 f4 AFS.

Any tips greatfully received? (apart from me having to buy more gear as my budget has just been wiped out with a tripod and ballhead setup! ;0))
