1DIII AF problems and custom functions.
Jun 29, 2007

Many people are saying that the custom functions of the 1DIII are much different from previous cameras and they're very complicated. I just don't see it. Below I've briefly described what I'm using to shoot sports. I don't think my camera is functioning properly, but I don't think it's because I don't understand the settings...

C.FnIII-1 - Same as 1D. I leave this at 0 because I don't use MF for anything.

C.FnIII-2 - Same as 1D. This one is causing what I feel to be unnecessary debate. If it works the way it should, there will be no difference in actual AF tracking speed and accuracy between slow and fast.

It has one purpose. If you've got it set towards fast, you want the focus to shift quickly from one subject to other subjects of varying distances from the camera. If you've got it on the slower side, you want the camera to ignore objects passing between the camera and what you are tracking, like a referee running into the frame, temporarily obstructing your path to the player you're tracking.

This function exists on the 1D and 1DII/N, and it works as advertised. It does perform the same way on the 1DIII. If the actual tracking speed and accuracy is affected by this function at all like some people say they've experienced, then Canon screwed this up.

I have mine set to one step slower than default. If you're shooting field sports with the sensitivity set to fast, you will be contributor of the year at http://www.refass.com (this is a real website, and I think it's pretty funny).

C.FnIII-3 - Same as 1D. This one seems pretty straightforward to me. If I've got a subject running at me and I want all frames in focus, I set it to 0. Even if the drive speed has to slow down a little to get the focus right, that's fine with me.

C.FnIII-4 - This one's new. However, I shoot with only one point active and therefore this setting doesn't affect me.

C.FnIII-5 - Same as 1D. I've always left it on 0. No problems then and there shouldn't be any now.

C.FnIII-6 - Same as 1D. I have one lens that allows me to utilize this function and I have it set to 4.

C.FnIII-7 - Minor front or back focus problem? Fixed.

C.FnIII-8 - Similar to 1D. I've never used expansion. I always had the most trust for the center point with my 1D, and expanding seemed to make the AF a little sluggish. Center point only with the 1DIII should work at least as well as the same setting with the 1D, and it does except when I'm under a bright sun.

C.FnIII-9 - Similar to 1D. I have it set to 0. I use them all (one at a time).

C.FnIII-10 - Same as 1D, although reaching the joystick from the vertical grip is a huge pain in the butt.

The rest are similar to the 1D and shouldn't AF performance except maybe fps and Canon says the slower you go, the more accurate it will be. Conclusion in next post...
