How to avoid Highlight Clipping?

Hi,

I have an S2IS and willing to buy an S3IS. However, I'm a little bit worried about the Highlight Clipping issues that has always been there in Canon Sx models.

I know that this is a kind of problem that we cant do much to fix in PhotoShop -unlike purple fringing. I'm wondering if there is a way to avoid that issue while taking the picture? Does playing with Exposure, WB or bracketing or other S2/3 IS features helps to avoid that?
