OK.. I'm on my second copy of this lens (new) The first one was totally defective. Push Pull got stuck between 136mm and 100mm. So I got a replacement today. It's having a few backfocusing issues. And wide open it has terrible bokeh and is incredibly soft.
The goose shot was taken using the center spot focus on his eye.
Not cropped or PP'd at all (taken with MKII)

The Summer Tanager was taken from the car window with the lens resting on a pillow support on the door frame. BTW the EXIF says its' 370mm..I had it all the way wide open to 400mm. What's with that? And get a load of the horrid bokeh. Positively ugly. I could do better handholding my 400mm prime. I honestly don't think the IS is working.
i know the light is harsh, but still..

If anyone can show me sharp images at 400mm with nice bokeh, please do..Or tell me what the heck I'm doing wrong. I shot all day 2 days ago with the 400mm... same conditions and didn't get this.

I'm thinking of giving up on this lens and getting a lighter tripod for my 400mm. instead.
Thanks for any input.
