Low Llight Zoom

I have a 20D with a kit lens and a 85MM 1.8 for low light pics (gymnastics and dance). I would like to add the vesatility of a zoom. I have looked at the 70-200 2.8, both cannon and sigma,also considering cannon 24-105 which I feel would be a good walk around lens as well. I am not sure if I want to drop 1,000+ on a lens and possibly be disapointed in the results as compared to my 85mm prime. Any suggestions?
