I've had problems before with SPP3 as well and restarting the program usually fixes things. Anyway, I've been using dcraw for extracting the JPGS for cataloging and quick browsing of files without having to open the SLOW SPP3.

I downloaded the bad image file and downloaded it and ran dcraw with the -i -v switch and below is the output from the bad file followed by the good file. This may be a good tool to see how bad a file is mangled. If you're luckly (depending on the type of file corruption), you may be able to extract the jpg image with the dcraw -e switch. In this case the file is really bad as dcraw reports an incorrect resolution and a missing jpg thumbnail.
