The rule for exposing RAW is usually stated as expose to the right - the histogram should be as close to the right edge without going over. This rule seems to apply only to RAW, not to jpeg.

What's the rule of thumb for jpg exposure, beyond that you typically would not want to hit either side of the histogram?
