Travel, walkaround lens recommendations?
Apr 28, 2007

I'm wondering if people here have a recommendation for a good walkaround lens for travel? Although I wasn't overly happy with it, I used the Sigma 18-125mm f3.5-5.6 on my old KM 7D and it worked okay. I have tried it on my A100 and with the 10mp (versus the 7D's 6mp) and I am less satisfied with it. My last big trip was last fall for 1 month in Japan and 1 month in Thailand. For that I used my Canon 30D with Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6 and Tamron 28-75mm f2.8. I still have the 30D and like it a lot, but the A100's SSS is just wonderful for the kind of photos I often take so I am thinking of using it as my main camera next time. You can see examples of the types of photos I take in my galleries here:

The new Zeiss 16-80mm f3.5-4.5 is one of my leading candidates, but several reports here of mediocre build quality have me concerned. I am also considering the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8. I certainly like the zoom range and optical quality of the Zeiss better and I think that is more important for me than the f2.8 aperture in this zoom range. Anything else of very good optical quality that I should be considering? I guess for this use I would want 18mm at least on the wide end.
