D40 overexposure, observations and help request
Apr 11, 2007

Newbie alert, but...

I know the D40 is known for its overexposure, but after a weekend of shooting and importinto iphoto, I was suprrised to see how overexposed it was.

On many shots I changed the exposure compensation down one or two notches, I think thats 0.3 and 0.7 resepctfully, that helped but there was still some things blowing out. I used matrix metering. Granted, I was shooting some difficult scenes like beaches and dark forstes. BTW, I found the iphoto histogram to be very helpful.

Why is this so? My Sony P&S does better exposure.

Anyway, I did some pp compensation and brought back some life, but should I just leave it in -0.7 ev most of the time and hope that helps?

Also BTW, I found the setting the exposure compensation down and using the D-Lighting feature in-camera worked well, when the scene required it.
