How to.....WB shot

So I was reading the other WB threads. I have a gray thing and want to set the custom WB. When I hold up the gray card, I fill the screen in the viewfinder, right. Should I have a bright light at the gray card or use natural light?

I have the gray card.....what next? Thanks
