The DVI specification originally was designed to accomodate a 165Mhz signal at the very limit of the spec. and to allow a maximum resolution of 1600x1200.

Any resolution above that (1920x1200 for instance) is pushing at the ragged end of the specification and has to do some clever things to get there (using something called 'reduced blanking' from what I gather). Long and short of it is, ATI graphics cards had better DVI signal quality than Nvidia. This was certainly true in the Geforce 6800 days. ATI are known to be very strict with 3rd party graphics card makers. Nvidia are becoming stricter now, so who knows, things might have changed?

My next purchase will most likely be a Nvidia card, but that's because Nvidia works better in Linux than ATI. Horses for courses.
