Well, I can't find a definitive answer in Thom's ebook. He talks about focus distance being utilized, pretty much the way the manual talks about it. I didn't see where he defined what that actually means. I don't know how the camera could actually know what the actual "distance" to your subject would be, based on focus info, but I suppose it could give a rough estimate based on focal length and the position of the focus drive, much in the same way that you can see the very rough focus distance estimates from MFD to infinity, on the printed slider in the window on the lens.

Some things are just mysterious!
