Lenses for Wedding with 30D
Feb 3, 2007

Hi folks!

I will be photographing my friend's wedding this spring as the primary photographer. I have taken photos (as a guest) at a few weddings before, with my 30D and 17-85 EF-S lens.

I'd like to rent or buy a set of new lenses for this occasion, which will be outdoors (ceremony) and indoors (reception). With the 17-85 as past experience, my main concern is to get one or two fast primes for the evening, but also I'd like a bit more reach than the 85mm for portraits outdoors. Here are photos of the venue:

After analyzing my EXIF data from past weddings and reading through the forums, I'm thinking of the following trio of Canon lenses:

  • 24-105L for ceremony outdoors

  • 24L for indoor group shots

  • 85 1.8 for indoor portraits

The only thing I'd be missing is real wide angle coverage (unless I brought the 17-85 just in case), so overall room shots indoors may be impossible, but I don't see it as a big problem.

If it goes well, I'll probably do more weddings in the future...

Thoughts?
