Do any of these have a perfect exposure (6 pics)

I'm posting 6 pictures I took at my local zoo. I've now had my D50 for about 3 months and I am getting a little better, but I have a hard time putting all the pieces together to get the perfect photo. In each of these pairs of pictures, it looks like one is underexposed and one is overexposed. I'm posting some of the basic EXIF data to show that there was some middle ground that might have produced the perfect shot.

So ... how far away are these from being perfectly exposed?

Any other comments and criticism are welcome.

All pictures were taken with the new Nikon 70-300VR, which has become my "do everything" lens.

Pic #1: 230mm, f/9, 1/1250, ISO 400 (looks underexposed)

Pic #2: 230mm, f/9, 1/320, ISO 400 (looks overexposed)

Pic #3: 70mm, f/4.5, 1/80, ISO 400 (looks overexposed)

Pic #4: 70mm, f/9, 1/160, ISO 400 (looks underexposed)

Pic #5: 90mm, f/7.1, 1/250, ISO 400 (looks overexposed)

Pic #6: 90mm, f/7.1, 1/640, ISO 400 (looks underexposed)
