80-400 VR vs 70-200 VR-G plus 2x teleconverter

OK - getting ready for trips time.

I need a long reach zoom: whats the quality comparison (and usability and all that - including VR) between the 80-400 VR and the 70-200 VR plus the TC20E teleconverter?

Any one tried them out head to head?
