There are certainly a lot of variation in B&W tastes. The full tone image is as dependent on good light as color is. I think the higher contrast B&W is a way to take a picture captured in ordinary light and add some kind of impact. The content may also be ordinary, but the rustic look of "at least I got the picture" is supposed to carry it...LOL
