Cost of sales, margins and printing on canvas
Jan 21, 2007

We have a studio offering weddings, children, senior, and family photography. Printing is done with professional lab (WHCC). Just considering going to canvas for larger portraits and concerned about margins and making money. We use mostly a la carte pricing, with a minimum order size and some incentives to drive average sale upwards.

Consider the following pricing

8x10 unmounted print costs $2, sells for $25 in our market
cost of sale for material only = 2/25 or 8% This is a good money maker.

16x20 print costs $24 mounted and needs to sell for $300 for the same cost of sale percent of 8%

16x20 print mounted on canvas costs $50 requiring a selling price of $625 for the same 8% cost of sales. Ouch, this is expensive...

Were you able to make the jump to canvas and keep your cost of sales % from increasing? Can you sell canvas for that much more money?
