Yes - but manually

I got my new D40 yesterday and used my older 35mm f2AI lens last night; then tried my 500mm f8 AI Reflex Nikkor this morning. Both lenses work fine on my camera in Program mode and setting the shutter speed manually. Of course, I do have to estimate exposures manually, but I am not intimidated by thatand for situations where I am unsure, I have an old LunaPro meter. I was surprised to find that the "in focus" red LEDs light up with both lenses to let me know when focus has been achieved. This is very helpful with both lenses because I plan to use the 35mm f2 for indoor low light shooting and because the 500mm has never been that easy to obtain perfect focus.
