AIS lenses can they be used on D40, D50?

I know the AIS lenses are useable on the D200 and higher end D2, but how about on the lowend, like D40 and D50.

I am using a Pentax K100D with allmy ols "K" and M42 Screw Mount lenses and it works very well with them, including correct display of the metering.

I would love to use my old AIS lenses on a Nikon DSLR. Can anybody who uses these AIS lenses and Nikon DSLR help me out.
