24-120 VR lens for D80

Hello all ,new guy to forum and digital photography. I will be buying a camera this week and have decided on the D80. Instead of one of the kit lenses , I might opt for the 24-120 VR. What do you guys think about this lens? Should I get one off the kit lenses and learn the camera then venture to new lenses? Or should I get a D50 ? I dont know what to get!!! Most of my photos will be outside and also some outside low light. Along with family stuff. I am definetly not a pro. Thanks Mike
