What Lens Should I Buy With the Nikon D80?

Same dilemma - D80 & "starter" lens

Having procrastinated over this for the last 3 or 4 months, I've just had the ok from my other half to buy myself a nice Christmas present.

I think that I'm going for the D80 with the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 to get me started (unless anyone can reassure me that the 18-70 or 18-135 kit lenses are of comparative quality).

I like the constant maximum aperture and this one looks like good value for money, although more expensive than the standard Nikon kit lenses. From reading several reviews, it seems to have the edge over the Sigma 18-50 f2.8.

I will also get a skylight filter and circular polarizer (nice winter blue skies coming up).

The only fly in the ointment was the introduction of the Pentax K10D, but I think that I've got that out of my system now!
