which file system to use on 500gb external hds?

Wife has new mbp and we'll be attaching two 500gb fw connected Lacie drives for backup. These drives will never be connected to a PC.

?Which file system should be used on the drives, the "mac" file system (whatever it's called), or (ugh) FAT32? Mac I would think, but not being a Mac expert I thought I would ask. TIA
