Traveling to exotic (dangerous?) places...

I'll be traveling to Saudi Arabia for a couple of weeks later this year. I don't intend to venture off where I don't belong, but I was hoping to snap pictures whereever I go.
I know some people in this forum have traveled to other "non-touristy" places (I remember seeing pictures of Ethopian tribal areas less than a month ago). Any advice for me? Should I leave the 5D at home and take a point-and-shoot? Should I get extra insurance (in case my luggage gets lost)? Thanks.
