5D and tripods

Just a little question about tripods.
I've got a pretty feeble Velbon Maxi i 347GB, and I get pretty frustrated with it. If I'm using my 5D (or 30D before) with say my 70-200 2.8 IS in portrait mode (using the tripod ring), I just get huge vertical slip, no matter how tightly I make it.
My question really is, will a better tripod (055PROB) help here?
It seems to me that the camera/lens to tripod plate connection is always going to be the weak link especially when you've got a (relatively) heavy lens in portrait mode pointing downwards.
Am I missing something?
