TSA Website says it's OK to bring camera pack + normal allowed carryons

From the post:

"You may carry one (1) bag of photographic equipment in addition to one (1) carry-on and one (1) personal item through the screening checkpoint. The additional bag must conform to your air carrier's carry-on restrictions for size and weight. Please confirm your air carrier's restrictions prior to arriving at the airport.

It goes on to comment about damage to digital cameras and to film.

Wish I'd known about this before my last trip, when I checked one bag because I carried on photo gear and a laptop bag. The overhead bins were half-empty, I guess because of the new TSA rules against carry-ons containing liquids.
