Before you take the plunge, consider a manual digital viewfinder camera like the ricohs. They shoot raw and have manual controls. They are fast and responsive. Have a look at the Ricoh forums. What you don't get with one of those is interchangeable lenses but in other respects they seem very good and some of the pictures look great

I'm an E-500 owner by the way and I changed from a Pentax Optio because of shutter lag and time between shots meant I missed stuff. But its true you do need to spend more time post processing with the digital SLR output.
