Deet, found in many insect repellents, attacks plastic. Not sure if it's the cause of this problem, but never use anything with Deet in it if you have any plastic on your camera. Insect repellents with an active ingredient of either Picaridin, also known as KBR 3023, or Oil of lemon eucalyptus, also known as p-menthane 3,8-diol or PMD are OK.
