Hope I can get 18-200 by beginning of October - cruise question

I noticed it is on back order from B&H. We are going on a cruise and rather than lug my 17-55 and 70-200 I may want to just take the 18-200. The reviews seem very good for this lens.
I am still debating about what camera stuff to take. A question for anyone that has been on a cruise - is it a problem taking camera gear to the on-board shows (I will be taking a Carnival cruise)? The 2.8 VR may come in handy for this but depending on how fast everyone moves and the lighting, it is possible the 18-200 could be used.
I know the bokeh will not be near as good as the 70-200VR but for events in daylight this can be a very handy lens as well as a great travel lens. Hope B&H will get another batch soon.
