what type of monitor to buy?

I need to get an affordable LCD monitor that costs
Currently the only spec I am familiar with is response time, which I imagine is more important for a gamer than someone like me who will be playing with his photos on PhotoShop.
I think I'll be getting a 19' monitor. Or should I be looking at getting bigger monitor?
I want a monitor that will optimize my digital imaging tasks - I won't be playing games or editing videos. So what specifications are important for me to look for in a monitor. What specs are most important for me....what is the minimum quality I should look for. for example what is a good pixel pitch or acceptable contrast ratio? I don't want to buy a monitor that would be great for a gamer but of little value for someone viewing static images like myself
If you have suggestions for a model or brand, then that is also greatly appreciated.
