D2X & Micro Nikkor 55mm f2.8 problem

Hello,
The lens is wide open with every shot I take, even if I turn the aperture ring on the lens to other apertures like f32. The lens is all manual and I set the camera to manual focus and manual program. When I take the lens off the camera and turn the aperture ring looking into the lens, nothing happens to the diaphragm blades. Am I stupid or is there some setting in the camera that I have missed or is there something wrong with the lens? Any help will be appreciated.
